Join the California Coastal Resilience Network for a lunchtime conversation on Wednesday, December 7th from 12-1PM about how legislation could clarify the circumstances under which the Coastal Act allows shoreline armoring in California.

The adverse impact of seawalls on the coast is well known. Coastal armoring degrades – and even eliminates – California’s beaches and other coastal habitats, limits beach access and impedes coastal recreation, and intensifies erosion on neighboring properties. Although the Coastal Act was designed to curtail coastal armoring, it’s provisions are confusing and it has been interpreted in ways that are inconsistent with the Act’s intent. The Nature Conservancy will host a California Coastal Resilience Network conversation about how legislation could clarify the circumstances under which the Coastal Act allows armoring. No legislation has been proposed yet – the purpose of this conversation is to socialize the concept, get a sense of how such legislation might help or impede Coastal Resilience planning, and evaluate where support and opposition might come from.
