SUMMARY:NETWORK WEBINAR: Engaging Marginalized Groups in Coastal Planning
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Network on November 15 from 12 – 1PM\, for a webinar titled\, Overcoming obstacles to community engagement: Including marginalized populations in restoration planning in the face of immigration\, language and educational barriers in South Oxnard. We will hear from Lucas Zucker\, Policy and Communications Director at CAUSE (Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy)\, and Lily Verdone\, Coastal Project Director at The Nature Conservancy\, about their work in partnership with the State Coastal Conservancy to engage marginalized community members in developing a vision for coastal access at Ormond Beach. Learn how they were able to work together creatively to engage with oftentimes marginalized community members\, overcoming immigration\, language and even education barriers to ensure that all community members have a say in envisioning the future of the Oxnard coast. \n CAUSE youth surveyed over 300 South Oxnard residents about the restoration of the Ormond Beach Wetlands. Credit: CAUSE \nFeaturing:  \n \nLucas Zucker directs CAUSE’s policy analysis and advocacy\, as well as new and traditional media communications. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in political economy. Lucas first volunteered for CAUSE as a teenager in 2003\, worked for CAUSE during college\, and joined the staff in 2012 as a youth organizer and researcher. At CAUSE he has worked on organizing campaigns and policy advocacy around voting rights\, healthy food access\, public transit\, environmental justice\, education\, immigrants’ rights\, affordable housing\, prison sentencing reform\, tax/budget reform\, and job access/quality. Before joining the CAUSE staff\, Lucas’ work and internship experience included the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (EBASE)\, the Center for Media Justice\, Ventura Mayor Bill Fulton\, the Tri-Counties Central Labor Council\, and the Obama White House Council of Economic Advisers. He has served as the chair of the board of directors of the California Student Public Interest Research Group and was appointed to the City of Berkeley Labor Commission. He currently serves on the board of the national Partnership for Working Families. He lives in Ventura with his plant. \n \nLily Verdone is a Coastal Project Director\, The Nature Conservancy. She develops and implements locally successful\, broadly applicable conservation strategies that benefit both people and nature.
