SUMMARY:NETWORK WEBINAR: Natural Infrastructure Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Join the CA Coastal Resilience Network on December 12th from 12pm to 1pm to learn about three different natural infrastructure adaptation projects along CA’s coast\, highlighting challenges\, financing\, policy mechanisms\, and lessons learned from each of the projects for those who might consider these approaches in their own jurisdictions. \nGuest speakers include: Jenna Judge\, Kim Cole\, Megan Cooper\, and Melodie Grubbs. Jenna will talk briefly on her efforts toward collecting information on examples of natural infrastructure projects in California and will provide a framework for an introduction to each of the case studies. Kim will present on the Window on the Bay managed retreat project on Monterey Bay. Megan will speak about the San Diego Bay Native Oyster Living Shoreline Project\, and Melodie will present on ReWilding Santa Monica’s Dunes. \nJenna Judge coordinates the San Francisco Bay and Outer Coast Sentinel Site Cooperative\, one of five NOAA Sentinel Site Cooperatives in the country\, created to leverage NOAA and partner resources and science to help coastal communities and ecosystems prepare for and adapt to sea level rise. In her role\, Dr. Judge works with partners to develop resources and plan\, convene and facilitate workshops that advance dialogue between diverse stakeholder groups that are planning and implementing strategies for sea level rise adaptation. Judge received a bachelor’s degree in aquatic biology from the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and earned her doctorate in integrative biology from the University of California\, Berkeley. \n \nKim Cole is currently the Interim Community Development Director for the City of Monterey. Ms. Cole leads the Housing\, Permit and Inspection\, Planning\, Property Management and Sustainability Offices. The Department’s mission is to provide the highest level of services and leadership in urban and strategic planning\, historical and architectural preservation\, sustainability practices\, zoning\, design\, development\, and capital budgeting. Ms. Cole has twenty five + years of experience in planning. Prior to working for the City of Monterey\, Ms. Cole worked for the City of Carmel and Cotton and Beland Associates\, a private planning firm. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from California State Polytechnic University\, Pomona. She is also recognized as a certified planner by the American Institute of Certified Planners. \n \nMegan Cooper is the Deputy Regional Manager for Southern California at the Coastal Conservancy. Ms. Cooper has 20 years of experience in coastal resource restoration and management in Southern California\, including her research and on-the-ground experience in seagrass restoration in San Diego Bay\, and as a project manager at the Wetlands Recovery Project and the Coastal Conservancy. \n \nMelodie Grubbs joined The Bay Foundation in September 2015 as the Watershed Programs Manager aiding in TBF’s mission to further science\, restore habitats\, manage field operations and grants\, and facilitate the production of GIS integrated program products. Before working with TBF\, Melodie served as an environmental consultant providing services to clients like the Morro Bay National Estuary Program and local Resource Conservation District. Prior to working at the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County as Field Operations Manager\, she served as scientist and chief mate onboard an oceanographic research vessel.
